Operational Detachment Alpha, 105th Special Operations Group

The oldest and best known SOG unit, and the unit most people think of when they hear the term ‘green beret’. Operators are tasked with engaging in unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, direct action in support of conventional forces, counter-insurgency, special reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, information operations, counterproliferation of weapons of mass destruction and security force assistance. Operators are provided a moderately increased degree of latitude regarding military regulations and their manner of performing their mission. While the 105th is the home unit of OD-A, there are a total of fourteen SOG units who contribute operators to the detachment. Operators from other SOG units in the detachment will sometimes refer to their original units when stating their role, e.g. ‘Operational Detachment Alpha, 481st Special Operations Group’, but just as often will simply leave the unit out. Being an Operator with OD-A is widely considered the most prestigious title an enlisted soldier could hold in the IDF.
